Saverio Spadea is a newly appointed Associate Professor in Structural Engineering at the Polytechnic University of Bari and mantains an Honorary Senior Lecturer position at the University of Dundee (UK), his previous academic institution.

Prior to that, Saverio held post-doctoral positions at the University of Bath (UK) and the University of Salerno (Italy) - where he also earned a PhD - spending research periods at McMaster University (Canada) and University of Miami (USA). During his varied academic experience, Saverio has been Principal Investigator, Co-Investigator and Fellow on several competitively funded Research Projects, and successfully supervised research students. He has built productive collaborations with world-class researchers and contributed to the development of technical guidelines and standards for buildings, bridges, and infrastructure both in Europe and in North America.

Saverio’s expertise lies in combining experimental methods with theoretical and computational mechanics, and viewing structures as complex, multi-variable systems. His research examines structural forms, various materials, and their impact on the environment. He has published papers focusing on concrete structures, innovative composite materials for construction, and new building techniques to reduce the embodied carbon involved in the construction process. His current research interests are in concrete construction automation and optimization, as well as sustainable construction and low carbon infrastructures.

Since 2017, Saverio Spadea is a Member of the Editorial Board of the ASCE Journal of Composites for Construction. In 2015, Dr Spadea was awarded the prestigious J. William Fulbright Scholarship in the category Visiting Scholar
